SoloRu Plans and Ideas

  • Rear disc brake conversion - rear discs were available on only a few '93-'01 Imprezas, but I collected all the parts and will have them installed soon. And now the new SP rules allow you to upgrade these freely, so I guess I didn't have to try so hard to get the exact pieces allowed under the update/backdate rules, but eh well.
  • Seats, harness, and a roll bar - I need to be more stable in the car when I'm driving. The STi seats are great, but without harnesses, it's just not good enough. I won't put in harnesses until I get a roll bar, and since the car doesn't do daily driver duty anymore, something less comfortable is probably okay. Something lower so that I can have more headroom would be great. Something lighter weight would similarly be a worthwhile investment. The STi seats are worth a bit too, so I can sell them to fund this project. The new seat would need to be on sliders though so that others can still drive the car.
  • Differentials - I've been toying with rebuilding the whole drivetrain of my car next. My current dream setup would be based on having one of the open tarmac Impreza center differentials that divert 65% of the torque to the rear axle. On top of that, I'd add the 4.111 final drive gearing to the back differential and run smaller diameter tires on the rear, which I've calculated to give me about 74% torque to the rear. Then, a really strong (probably clutch-based) differential in the back and a helical (Quaife or OBX?) in the front would make sure that each axle continues putting power to the ground. As of 11/16/2008, I've acquired a clutch-based differential from the rear end of a mid-eighties Subaru.
  • Suspension - I'm still running a suspension setup that costs less than $1000 for all four corners (struts, springs, coilovers, top hats). I'd like to see about getting some proper double-adjustable struts in here, like Motons or Konis. Zzyzx Motorsports makes a coilover setup that uses Konis that would be great, though using twin-tube struts instead of the nicer monotube 2812s.
  • Bushings - I've replaced a lot of suspension pieces and always replaced the bushings when I have. But all the suspension arms, the differential subframe, the differential, etc are all using stock bushings. Those are old tired rubber, so it would be worthwhile to get all new bushings for those joints.
  • Lower control arms - A new SP rule says I can replace the lower suspension arms with adjustable-length units for camber adjustment. I think I've seen a lot of adjustable length arms for Imprezas that are actually made of aluminum too, which would be great for losing some weight.
  • The driver needs to lose some weight too.
