Panic/excitement sets in...

Yup, that's right, we just put in an offer for a house and it was accepted! Holy cow. I'm panicking and bouncing off the wall with excitement at the same time. It's a 4 bedroom, 2 bath contemporary on 5.75 acres of land in Merrimack, NH. It's about 10 minutes to work for me and about 20 for Neil. It also has outstanding perennial gardens. I don't believe in omens, but after 21 months of looking, there were 4 wild turkeys in the front yard when we drove up AND we went to see it on Neil's birthday. It might not be an omen, but it is a pretty cool story. :-) Pending home inspection and appraisal and everything, we move in August. Lucky for me that will be in the middle of crazy time at work. Great time to be moving and finding a renter. :-)

SciFi posters, computer games, and junk food turn female students off

jenschelly's picture

I was reading through the SWE magazine and came across a quick article on Classroom Environments Provide Cues and Impact Participation. It was about a study that showed that females who were exposed to a stereotypically geeky classroom (SciFi posters, coke cans, video game boxes) were less interested in computer science than those shown non-geeky objects in the classroom (nature posters, a dictionary, coffee mugs, etc.). How crazy is that? That means that female students who walk into classrooms with geek stuff are less likely to take math, science, etc. That's bad! A lot of classes have that kind of stuff in them.

My friends and family are amazing - they raised $675 for Big Brothers Big Sisters!

I am unbelievably lucky to have incredible friends and family. All together they raised $675 for Big Brothers Big Sisters. How impressive is that?! I can't believe how generous and kind my friends and family are; they consistently astonish me. I'm so fortunate to have them!
